Let’s get to know a bit more about thurane in Part 1 of this 3 part CCM Artist Featured Spotlight…

Artist Name:
thurane

Genres:
Worship, Rock, AC, CCM, CHR

Hometown:
Youngtown, AZ

Label:
SPINNUP/Universal Music Group

Hobbies/Interests Apart from Music:
Working out, Spiritual Formation/Discipleship, Politics (I’m a Jeffersonian Republican, more libertarian than conservative)

Last Netflix Binge:
West Wing (great show, I don’t agree with the liberal political aspects of the show)

Musical Influences:
Paul Baloche, Led Zeppelin, Chris Tomlin, Beatles, Pat Barrett, Elvis Presley, Matt Redman, Van Halen, Lincoln Brewster, and G-n-R

Very First Musical Purchase:
Peavey Bass (I had to pay my mom back)

CCM: If you had only five words to describe your new album, it would be…?
thurane: Groundbreaking rockin’ authentic vertical worship!

CCM: Do you have a favorite song from the new album? Why?
thurane: “It’s All Good (ATAGIY)” because it expresses the truth of God’s goodness in the midst of oppression and my opportunity to worship him with a smokin’ lead guitar with layered sixties’ inspired vocals!

CCM: What led you to pursue a career or ministry in music?
thurane: First starting in secular music, it was initially for the obvious reasons: fame, money, girls. But God called me to salvation and I gave up music for several years, heeding His call to return to music after many confirmations from His still small voice, His word, and the multiple situations I found myself in that led me to found the groups New Jerusalem (hard rock) and Kenyon Grey (POP/CCM/CHR) and now worship music as a solo singer-songwriter.

Later, a pastor told me that better worship was needed in the church, a record company president said that they were only signing CCM artists, and multiple churches offered me staff positions to lead their worship—and I turned all of those opportunities down. That resulted in a “Jonah & the Great Fish” scenario that led me to leading worship on staff at various churches since 2007. From playing so many worship songs, I’ve been inspired to write my own worship music for the church.

CCM: Do you remember that moment when you realized you wanted to make an actual career out of music?
thurane: It was after seeing Jailhouse Rock on tv. Elvis Presley made performing music look cool. Doing it for the Lord came after dedicating myself to Him without music initially.

CCM: What are your hopes for the new project?
thurane: I want to reach 20,000 churches with these songs as they add them to their worship services.

CCM: If you could potentially tour with any other artist or band (that you haven’t already), who would you choose and why?
thurane: Chris Tomlin and Pat Barrett, because I identify with the way that they write songs and lead worship.

CCM: What was the last song you listened to on your playlist or stereo?
thurane: “We Gather Together” – the old hymn

CCM: What was the last book you read?
thurane: Bonheffer: Pastor, Prophet, Martyr, Spy

CCM: If you could tell the world about another artist/band to check out, who would it be?
thurane: Pat Barrett, he’s an incredible worshiper, worship leader and singer-songwriter.

CCM: What has been interesting to you musically lately? Perhaps something new to you in terms of listening habits or influences?
thurane: Developing my ability on the Motif. As a guitarist, I’m limited by what I prefer to use it for. So, tackling the Motif and incorporating symphonic software sampling from East-West has been a focus for me.

CCM: Name a song that you wish you’d written (and why).
thurane: “Above All” by Paul Baloche. It is inspired, sounds as if it “eternally existed” and feels Spirit created, like God wrote it through Paul. The amazing thing is that it’s incredibly emotive yet perfectly crafted, expressing that God is above us yet placed us above all in dying for us.

CCM: How did you arrive at the name of your new album?
thurane: : authentic worship : is a title inspired by a move towards worship in the midst of chaos, failure, rejection and pain. That’s why the cover is designed to look like a hurriedly rushed package with a broken typewriter and sloppy, wet ink. The songs express a similar emotion with simple messages, yet having a contradictory polished production.

CCM: What can listeners expect in terms of the sound, style and lyrics?
thurane: The E.P. is a high-energy worship explosion, venturing into modern expressions of passion for God with intense flurries of musical majesty, particularly with “Worthy.” Lyrically the words are relatively simple expressions of praise and love to God. “It’s All Good (ATAGIY)” is based on Romans 8:28 , taking a familiar meme from today & merging it with a familiar scripture. “Over & Under” emerges from Psalm 139:8 and “You Gave Me (the ANSWER)” pummels home the idea that John 14:6 is more than a quote, it’s a living seed providing the basis of identity in Christ.

CCM: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Paul Baloche, Jimmy Page, Pat Barrett, Paul McCartney, Chris Tomlin, Elvis Presley, Lincoln Brewster

CCM: What was the songwriting process like on this record?
thurane: Long! When initial song ideas are born, they slowly take form and shape, get destroyed, re-configured, smashed again—then finally reconstructed into worship songs. After that, as I lead worship with them live at church, my musicians and I play the songs, where they change more. Then, finally, the studio production determines the final version that gets released to radio.

CCM: Are there any underlying themes or threads that tie this project together?
thurane: Despite the evil that surrounds us and the sins that entangle us, God’s goodness bursts through light like a lightning bolt, piercing the darkness that entangles our souls. Even as the world and its hatred engulf us, the Lord’s love surrounds and fills us even more. Answers are found in Him, and we find our value through expressing God’s worthiness.

CCM: How important is your faith or spirituality within your music?
thurane: Integral, essential, and inextricably connected to my worship songs and music. I left secular music to do music for the Lord, and so shall I remain.

CCM: What message do you hope listeners will take away from your music, regardless of what they believe?
thurane: I want people, whether believer or non-believer, to experience the intense power of God’s passion for us, feel His love, be drawn into worshiping Him, and receive salvation.
